We are pleased to announce the establishment of a new Student Section at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The UNCC Student Section is under the school’s Fire and Safety Engineering Technology Program, in the department of Engineering Technology and Construction Management.

Many thanks to Dr. Michael Benjamin, who is the faculty advisor; the student section officers, the Executive Committee of ASSP Tarheel Chapter and others that supported this long-time dream that has now become reality.

“Since students are from the Fire Safety Engineering Technology Program, we have aimed to gear this club (the section) to the safety applications of the field of fire protection, but still cover the general safety practices” – Seth Averette, Student Section President.

It was about this same time last year that the Region welcomed Liberty University Student Section in Lynchburg, Virginia. We are excited that our students are getting engaged with professional activities from college, which is a boost for their future career paths.

ASSP Region 6 welcomes – Liberty University Student Section!

Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, part of the Star Valley Chapter, is home to our latest student section. The school’s residential industrial and systems engineering program offers a B.S in Industrial and Systems Engineering.

Building on experience and support provided by faculty advisor Diana Jo Schwerha, Ph.D., the section’s officers took the lead in building the section and recruiting the members needed to form the section.

“We have a focus on servant leadership,” Schwerha says. “I would like to weave those leadership skills into our academic training so that our students enter the workforce prepared for both the technical and leadership challenges ahead of them.”

ASSP Chapters: Guidance on Return to Face-to-Face Programming COVID-19 has changed what we do and how we do it. This includes how our members and leaders approach chapter meetings and events. ASSP chapters connect members to valuable education, networking and leadership opportunities. We know leaders and members are eager to reconnect through face-to-face programming. At the same time, we all must remain vigilant about protecting the safety and health of members, leaders and attendees. To do so, we must continue to monitor the latest information about this public health issue and recognize how chapter activities may impact the Society’s reputation. While each chapter must exercise its own judgment, we continue to strongly counsel all chapters to align with the Society’s approach and hold off scheduling in-person meetings of members or leadership teams through August 31, 2021.
